Manderscheid has two castles: the Oberburg and the Niederburg. The uniqueness of the castles is that they were not built on a mountain as usual, but in a valley.
The construction of the Oberburg is on a flattened hilltop. You can still see a triangular outer wall and the five-story keep in the ruins today, which can now be entered again.
At the very top you are rewarded with a beautiful view of the Niederburg, Manderscheid as well as the Liesethal.
The Niederburg is the younger one of the two castles. It impresses with its location on a separate, steep ridge surrounded by the loop of the Lieser river. In the 12th century, the lords of Manderscheid ruled the castle. Under the reign of Wilhelm V, the manageably castle developed into a festive seat of power with a fortress.
According to a tale, a haughty and cruel count lived in the castle, whose daughter fell in love with a servant. When the couple was caught, the count ordered the servant to be executed immediately. He had his daughter walled into a small chamber in the Niederburg, where she received food and water through a small opening. After some time, she died miserably.

The Count Tour
“Historial city tour with Count Dietrich III. from Manderscheid through the electoral town of Manderscheid” takes place every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., one to two times a month from April to December. In the months of October to December as a torchlight city tour.
Count Dietrich III. takes you into the world of Middle Ages on a city tour to historic places in Manderscheid.
Who was this Dietrich anyway?
He lived in the Niederburg from 1423 to 1498 and rules as Imperial Count from 1457 to 1488. During his reign he significantly increased his sphere of power through acquisitions and a clever policy of inheritance. This way he was able to call himself the Count of Manderscheid and Blankenheim and Sir of Schleiden-Gerolstein and Jünkerath since 1468.
In addition, another count tour, the “historical castle hike to the Oberburg with torches” is offered two to three times a year.
There will be a greeting when you get picked up by the Count of Manderscheid, followed by a hike to the Oberburg. You will receive explanations about the Middle Ages, the Manderscheid castles as well as training to become a knight. In the shadow of the defense tower, a “lad or lady” can be taught by the Count how to use a sword, if desired.
Below the Manderscheid Oberburg, it shines in new splendor: the Wäschebach Bridge.
The trail from the Oberburg via the Wäschebach to the Belvedere was laid out in 1886 by the Beautification Association. The trail created an important connection to one of the most beautiful vantage points of the Vulkaneifel, the Belvedere.
The new Wäschebach Bridge completed in May 2022, now spans the Lieser over a distance of 35 meters. The new steel construction, which hovers 8 meters above the Lieser as suspension bridge, is flood-proof. The bridge is a very important link in the Eifel hiking trail network.
The Vulkanweg (main hiking trail no. 13 of the Eifelverein) leads over the bridge. The Vulkanweg connects the eastern and the central Vulkaneifel in large loops, a hiking trail through the young and recent volcanism of the Eifel. The Vulkanweg leads from the Rhein into the Brohltal, over the Gänsehals with wonderful views, past the Genoveva Cave, along the Ulemener-, Pulver- and Holzmaar to Manderscheid. Through the Wolfsschlucht via the Moseberg, along the “Windsborn” and Meerfelder Maar, over the Landesblock, the Bleckhausener Mühle and through Üdersdorf into the beautiful Liesertal with the “Lieserpfad”. Through the Berbachtal up to the Weinfelder Maar, to the Mausebrg with Dronketurm and Gemündener Maar to Daun and further over the Ersndtberg and Pelm into the Kylltal. Again up over the Munterley and finally down to Gerolstein.
In addition, the Wäschebach Bridge is an important link for the new via ferrata around the Manderscheid castles (connection of stages 1 and 2 of the Manderscheid via ferrata).
The Burgklettersteig Manderscheid, built in 2022, expands the tourist offer of the classic hiking region with a highlight that in unique in Germany, which particularly appeals to younger people and families.
There are 3 stages of the via ferrata with different levels of difficulty over a length of about 4 kilometers, which are linked to the existing network of hiking trails, so that the via ferrata can be climbed either as a whole or each stage individually.
The Lieser stage, which lies between the Achtergraben und the newly built Wäschebachbrücke, is characterized by the unique landscape experience in which the climber is directly above the babbling Lieser, which accompanies him on his way. Here, moderately difficult chain passages repeatedly alternate with short hiking route.
The Oberburg stage is an easy beginner’s route in category A/B, where you can test your head for heights on a 30-meter-high climbing rock. The stage ends at the Oberburg, which you can take by storm.
The most athletic and demanding stage in category C/D is the Niederburg stage, which starts at the tournament meadow and leads up to the vicinity of the imperial temple. Not only courage is required here, but also strong arms. The highlight of this stage is the 60-meter-long 20-meter-high castle bridge, spanned over the Lieser, which demands a good head for heights from the climber.
The entire via ferrrata may only be climbed with the appropriate equipment, which can be borrowed from the tourist information center.
Although the trail is freely accessible and free of charge, it is not recommended for the inexperienced to take on independently. You should turn to experienced guides or attend a via ferrata course first.

In both spa parks in Manderscheid – spa park 1 directly at the Kurhaus (Grafenstraße), spa park 2 behind the former town hall (Friedrichstraße-Kieselweg) you can escape and switch off from your everyday life for a several moments. The parks are the perfect place to clear your thoughts, enjoy nature and relax your soul. Since the spa parks are surrounded by mixed forests, you can enjoy oxygen-rich air. Furthermore, Kneipp’s water treading pools are located in the parks. These are positive for your body in many ways. Treading water stimulates the circulation and metabolism, promotes blood flow, strengthens the immune system and has a vegetative stabilizing effect. However, the water treading pools operate exclusively during the summer.

Tree-of-Life-Church Manderscheid

The Tree-of-Life-Church in Manderscheid, a retreat for everyone. It was documented for the first time around 1330. Saint Hubertus is the patron saint of the church.
After several bombings towards the end of the war, which severely damaged the structure of the church, it was partially rebuilt and redesigned in 1967 and 1968. What remained of the old church was the old bell tower from 1692.
Why Tree-of-Life-Church?
It bears this name because of a stone pillar that has the shape of a tree of life, which protrudes from the baptismal font inside the crypt through the ceiling into the chancel. From there you can see the archaic as a symbol for the crown, which is decorated with leaves and fruit.
The crypt serves both as a baptistery and as a place of worship for small groups.
The catholic church in Manderscheid can not only excite with its worship services, but also with its organ concerts. As a member of the Organ Summer concert series, organ days take place regularly, which offer every visitor the opportunity to enjoy organ concerts by organists from all over the world.
Heimatmuseum (Local History Museum) Manderscheid

The Heimatmuseum Manderscheid takes you back in time!
Since 1995, the Heimatmuseum has been at its current location, opposite the town hall.
Numerous exhibits and documents tell of the more than 1.000-year history of Manderscheid and its surroundings. Five departments show the development from a weaving village becoming a health resort. In the museum’s picture gallery, surrounded by beautiful motifs, you can also get officially married.
A special highlight is the classroom located on the first floor. The old maps as well as the calculator bring back good or not so good memories of your own schooldays.
By today’s standard, the furnishings of an Eifel farmhouse kitchen and an old bedroom are hard to imagine, because they convey a vivid impression of everyday life in the past.
Pharmacy vessels from the Manderscheid pharmacy, which was founded in 1835, are special exhibits in the small museum pharmacy. In the cobbler’s workshop, the foreman seems to be having lunch – everything is in its place, as many people here in Manderscheid still know.
A large model of the two castles in Manderscheid shows their condition around the year 1600.
The agricultural exhibition is displayed in the outdoor area with stable and barn.
It provides an insight into the everyday work of the Eifel residents.

Adventure for big and small in the Candle and Wax Manufacture Moll.
Under the guidance of wax maker master Michael Moll, you can cast your own lava stone candle.
This “Original Eifeler Lavakerze” is made with local materials from the Vulkaneifel. The bubbling and hissing of the hot lava and misty smoke are reminiscent of a real volcanic eruption!
Pouring the lava pots has its own charm. In addition, there is the filling of fragrant beeswax, which each participant fills into their own candle, then provided with the appropriate wick and finally decorated with a piece of honeycomb.
You will also learn all sorts of interesting and amusing things about the history of wax candles and the tradition of this old craft.

Delicious ice cream with fresh fruit and farm owned milk is available at the Vulkaneifelhof run by the Becker family.
The farm was built in 1950 by the settlement company. Back then they owned 15 hectares of land, 3 cows. 2 horses, 2 pigs and 10 chicken. In 1964 the grandparents of Martin Becker, Franz and Margarete Grunenberg, took over the farm.
Over the years the farm has been continually expanded. In 1999, the old barn buildings that became vacant as a result, were converted into a family house and a holiday apartment. Since then, the farm has been managed by Martin Becker. The main commercial farm with extensive agriculture now has 94 hectares of land. The harvest is used exclusively to feed the animals on the farm. Between 50 and 60 dairy cows and just as many offspring are cared for here.
In 2010, another mainstay – ice cream production – was created. Since then, there have been many different and delicious types of ice cream at the Vulkaneifelhof. In 2014 the Milchbar 24 was opened. This is a vending machine where ice cream, snacks, beverages, coffee products, milk and meat products can be purchased 24/7.

In the southern volcanic Eifel, not far from the Moseberg volcanic group and the Meerfelder Maar, you will find the Jugend-Hüttendorf Vulkaneifel in a romantic side valley of Manderscheid.
Crater lakes, maars, volcanoes and castles in an unspoilt, hardly overdeveloped landscape can be reached on foot from here.
Jugend-Hüttendorf
The Jugend-Hüttendorf is oriented towards nature education and has its roots in the youth movement, reform und Waldorf education. Its credo is forward-looking youth work that encourages young people in their entire personality, trains their senses and makes them fit for life. The Jugend-Hüttendorf and the unique landscape around Manderscheid offer the ideal condition for this. This creates the freedom you expect for a creative, relaxed stay and help with the organization of any kind – even before the trip. The village is particularly suitable for pupils in the 4th – 6th grade, kindergartens and parental camps, but also for advanced courses and internships (e.g. field measurement internship) at middle and high school. They live in simple, neat, heated wood cottages. Each group can book its own day room. A large, spacious area with playgrounds and sport fields, fireplaces and barbecue areas are at your disposal. You can choose between wholesome, child-friendly full board or self-catering. The Jugend-Hüttendorf ist certified with the “GutDrauf” label of the Federal Center for Health Education (BzgA) for its health-conscious services. They also offer you a variety of group dynamic programs and geological excursions.
Naturcamping
Attached to the Hüttendorf is a small family campsite. This is largely natural and offers you plenty of open space for a carefree stay. Most sites are located in terraces along the side valley and offer a view of the valley up to the Moseberg.

Maarmuseum Manderscheid

The Maarmuseum Manderscheid is a scientific museum focused on the Eifel volcanism. Here you will learn the difference between a volcanic cone and a Maar funnel in an understandable and up-to-date way. The topics are presented in a wide variety of ways: word panels, showcases, video and audio presentation, museum quizzes and new, digital formats. Our museums tour or excursion on the “GEO-Route Vulkaneifel” is individually adapted to your group and actively involves you.
The Maarmuseum Manderscheid graphically explains the formation of funnel-shaped maars to young and old. Furthermore, you can marvel at a subtropical Eifel Landscape. During this period 45 million years ago, the world-famous “Eckfeld primeval horse” and one of the oldest honey bees in the world lived on the Eckfeld Maar. In the Maarmusem you can marvel at the original fossils. With the Terranaut you will descent into the depths of the earth and be watch live as a maar is formed.
The Vulkanerlebnispark Moseberg near Bettenfeld is a unique window into the geological history of the Eifel. There, volcanic forms and structures are explained in an accessible, sustainable and tangible way by means of an outdoor classroom and nature trail. You will able to directly look into the interior of a volcanic con: solidified channels, red sweat slag, black lapilli-bomb-tuff etc. The park is free of charge all year around and is one of the stops during the GEO excursion.

Family Outdoor Pool Manderscheid offers a great variety. In addition to the wide water slide, a floor air bubble pool and the waterfall shower in the non-swimmer’s pool, there are starting blocks and a diving board with a one-meter and a three-meter board in the swimmer’s pool.
